Granite stone surfaces, product care & maintenance

Your Trethewey Stone granite bench top is handcrafted and presented to you with pride.  Each installation is unique as the geology of a natural stone is inherently a random collection of mineral deposits, crystals, inclusions, veins and colours.

Please consider the following to protect your new investment:
  • Scratching - Normal kitchen utensils will not scratch. Be careful with gemstones or tungsten implements as they WILL scratch.
  • Staining - Granite should not stain under normal conditions.  However, some materials are more porous than others.  As a precaution do not store containers of oil or margarine on granite surfaces.  Prolonged exposure to oil can mark granites.  Wipe up spills immediately.  Colouring agents may stain some lighter materials.
  • Wax - Wax regularly to build up a counter resistance to staining.
  • Heating - Beware of very hot items, large deep saucepans or super heated fry pans (cast iron) which may cause cracking or crazing. It is recommended that you use a trivet or board before placing these items on the bench top. Use discretion.
  • Cleaning - Use hot soapy water or your preferred liquid cleaner.  A green plastic based scouring pad can be used to remove any food residues that cannot be easily removed by your dishcloth.  Your Trethewey Stone bench top is supplied with a recommended cleaner. This cleaner can be purchased through Trethewey Stone Ltd.
  • Polishing - Granite will retain its polish indefinitely but this can be enhanced by using wax based polishing compounds.  Regular polishing will improve your bench tops resistance to oil or dye based staining.
  • Honed Granite - Taking the high gloss off the granite will open the surface making it more porous and susceptible to staining. Marking will occur as a result of oils or stains getting into the surface of the stone. We recommend a regular application of clear vegetable oils to build a stain resistant patina in the granite and keep the appearance consistent.
Always remember that unless fully supported natural stone is a fragile material.  Avoid sitting or standing on unsupported stone items. Provided the above considerations are remembered a natural stone surface will last indefinitely.
